ABOUT

Certain secondary releases rely completely on the pedigree of their famous siblings. Le Difese refuses that shadow. Crafted by the cellar team at Tenuta San Guido, the historic estate behind Sassicaia, this cuvée trades massive extraction for sheer, unadulterated vibrancy. The 2024 iteration shifts the traditional makeup, leaning heavily on bright Sangiovese from higher-altitude sites in Chianti Rufina, accented by a fraction of the estate's own Cabernet Sauvignon. The final composition carries incredible momentum.

The wine hums with nervous tension. Fermented exclusively in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, the freshly pressed berries retain a sharp, crunchy purity. Maturation follows in French and American oak barriques previously used for Guidalberto, gently softening the sharp edges without burying the distinctly Tuscan terroir under heavy wood tannins. I love the sheer transparency of the fruit profile here. It's a fiercely poised, acid-driven red that demands an immediate place at your dinner table.

TASTING NOTES

Nose: Crushed red cherries and wild strawberries jump from the glass with a sharp, slightly dusty intensity. A deep savory undercurrent quickly follows, bringing forward dried Mediterranean herbs, bitter orange peel, and faint cedar shavings. The bouquet feels remarkably tense.

Palate: Tart cranberry and fresh plum hit the tongue with surprising force. Fine-grained, distinctly chalky tannins quickly anchor the bright fruit, pulling the focus toward a highly structured mid-palate laced with raw cocoa and cinnamon. Electric acidity drives every single sip.

Finish: Brisk and deeply mineral-driven. The final impression leaves lingering traces of iron-rich soil, bitter almond, and a fleeting echo of dried sage across the gums.

FOOD PAIRING

The piercing acidity and chalky tannin structure here demand rich, fat-driven proteins to achieve true balance. A thick cut of wild boar ragù draped over handmade pappardelle makes for an absolute masterclass in regional pairing. Alternatively, pour it alongside a heavily charred ribeye steak smothered in garlic herb butter, allowing the wine's bright red fruit to cleanly slice through the rich, savory meat.
