Old Stubborn comes from a place few whiskey drinkers think about when they imagine premium bourbon: West Virginia. The undisclosed distillery there — believed to be Smooth Ambler, one of the state's pioneering craft producers — ran a pot still through wheated mashbills more than a decade ago, producing something that drinks nothing like the Pappy comparisons some wheated fans reflexively reach for. This is bigger, oilier, and more idiosyncratic. Individual barrels range from 117 to 142 proof; each bottle is labeled with its specific barrel sticker so you know exactly what you pulled. Barely filtered, naturally colored, uncompromised.

The Old Swagger 12 Year Cask Strength Rye is cut from entirely different cloth. MGP's rye mashbill — typically north of 95% rye grain — is among the most recognizable in American whiskey, and at 12 years of age, it's developed the kind of complexity that only time in charred oak can provide. Bley releasing it at cask strength rather than the 100-proof BiB standard he used for the first Swagger iteration says something: at this age and this mashbill, dilution would cost you flavor. The heat isn't heat so much as presence.
