ABOUT
ABOUT
The inaugural U.S. Edition (2022) marked Ichiro Akuto’s first single-malt release dedicated exclusively to America—an ambitious blend of nine casks including ex-IPA, imperial stout, and hopped cider barrels alongside classic sherry hogsheads. The result is an effervescent Japanese malt that bursts with tropical fruit, barley sweetness, and toasty malt depth. At 53.5% ABV, it feels alive yet refined—like summer fruit under gentle oak shade. Each sip delivers honeyed malt, ripe melon, and citrus zest balanced by faint bitterness from its beer-cask roots. Only ~2,200 bottles were produced, making it a collectible debut that set the tone for what came next.
The 2023 U.S. Edition ventures into bolder terrain—a heavily peated Chichibu malt built from French oak (Taransaud T5), Mizunara, and sherry casks. It’s a study in contrast: smoke and citrus, honey and heat, balance and bite. On the nose, orange peel, mint, loquat and melon lift through gentle peat. The palate unfurls vanilla, caramel, ginger and black pepper over honeyed malt and coastal brine. The finish lingers nutty and herbal with smoke that whispers, not shouts. It’s both refined and rebellious—classic Chichibu precision wrapped in peat’s embrace.
The 2024 U.S. Edition returns to an unpeated style after the smoky 2023, embracing Chichibu’s clean malt purity. A micro-vatting of sixteen barrels (15 ex-bourbon, 1 sherry hogshead), it showcases barley at its brightest and oak at its most refined. Ages range from four to ten years, including two floor-malted casks—rare for Japan. The nose offers baked apple, toffee, and soft vanilla cream. Palate unfolds with orchard fruit, shortbread, and caramelized sugar, leading to a finish of oak spice and gentle bitterness. Elegant, rounded, and deeply Chichibu in character, this is the most classical expression yet in the series.
The 2025 U.S. Edition is composed of only 16 barrels aged between 5 and 9 years; the resulting vatted single malt beautifully marries Chichibu's signature fruit-forward spirit with complex, savory notes. The ex-IPA casks impart a vibrant hoppy bitterness and tropical zing, while the Imperial Stout casks contribute a rich, dark coffee and chocolate depth. This whisky is bottled at a robust 52.5% ABV, un-chill-filtered, and naturally colored, ensuring the complete, unadulterated flavor profile of this bold experiment shines through.
The collectible label pays homage to American literature, featuring an illustration of Mark Twain enjoying a dram. This unique fusion of Japanese precision and American ingenuity makes the 2025 US Edition a must-have for both Chichibu enthusiasts and collectors of innovative world whiskies.
