ABOUT

Unexpected arrivals often bring the greatest rewards. Old Grand-Dad quietly unleashed this seven-year, single-barrel behemoth onto retail shelves without a single press release, surprising the most dedicated bourbon hunters everywhere. The extended maturation profoundly transforms the underlying liquid. Instead of delivering raw heat, the classic high-rye mashbill develops an intricately layered, confectionary profile. Jim Beam traditionally utilizes a lower barrel entry proof for the 114 expression, dramatically concentrating heavier, oilier flavor compounds during the lengthy aging process. It's an entirely different pour.

This specific bottling captures a pivotal moment in the brand's history. Bourbon purists always revered the standard 114 for its bold, unabashed spice. This single barrel iteration shifts that paradigm entirely. The signature cinnamon heat recedes slightly, making room for robust orchard fruits and dark syrup. You'll quickly notice a distinct evolution in the glass. Certain elements elevate this expression above its peers:

  • Aged a minimum of seven years for superior oak integration.
  • Uncut 114 proof delivery ensures maximum flavor retention.
  • Singular barrel selection highlights unique, idiosyncratic maturation characteristics.

These carefully curated attributes create a remarkably dense, chewy mouthfeel that commands your immediate attention. Quality like this speaks volumes. Finding a high-proof, age-stated single barrel at this tier feels increasingly like discovering a hidden relic from a bygone era of whiskey production.

TASTING NOTES

Nose: Dense cherry cola and rich oak sawdust merge with an unexpected confectionery sweetness, highlighting faint pear, clove, and a distinct licorice undertone.

Palate: A syrupy, carbonated sensation delivers vibrant tangerine and black tea before giving way to warming, subdued cinnamon spice and deep caramel layers.

Finish: Oily and enduring, it coats the mouth with lingering hot cinnamon, charred oak, and a fading echo of sweet orange citrus.

FOOD PAIRING

The bold, high-rye spice profile cuts beautifully through fatty, smoked meats. Pair this robust pour with a slow-smoked beef brisket slathered in a tangy, pepper-forward barbecue sauce. The rich, savory crust perfectly mirrors the lingering cinnamon heat, while the rendered fat tames the high proof effortlessly. It's a truly stellar combination. For an alternative, a slice of dark chocolate pecan pie accentuates the inherent confectionary sweetness and toasted oak notes hidden deep within the whiskey.

I thought the 114 proof was a major win for Old Grand Dad, but now the 7 year bottle is out of this world. It shares the same mash bill as the original 114 but because it's distilled at a lower proof point and then bottled at barrel proof, you get a major wow-smash-punch. This is certainly my new favorite OGD spirit. Five stars *****

Fan of OGD 114 and was excited to hear there would be a single barrel. Especially since there were rumors OGD 114 was being discontinued. The single barrel is more complex and has a higher viscosity. Very flavorful and a good value for the price.

Somewhat of a rarity in today’s bourbon world. Delivered on quality / uniqueness of the juice, but did not sacrifice the price point to do so.
