Buffalo Trace Experimental Spirits Distilled From Grain & Hops

Buffalo Trace Distillery's Experimental Collection has unveiled its 26th release: "Spirits Distilled from Grain and Hops." This innovative spirit explores the fusion of whiskey and beer-making techniques by incorporating hops into the distillation process.

In 2013, Buffalo Trace's Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley initiated an experiment to assess the impact of hops on distilled spirits. The process began with unaged Buffalo Trace bourbon distillate, which was infused with two hop varieties: Czechoslovakian Saaz noble hops, known for their earthy and floral notes, and American Zythos hops, recognized for tropical and subtle herbal characteristics. After a 30-minute infusion, the distillate underwent a second distillation and was then aged in charred American oak barrels for over 11 years. The result is a unique spirit that marries the bitterness and aromatic qualities of hops with the rich, oaky character of aged whiskey.

Nose: Hoppy aromas reminiscent of citrus and herbal notes found in beer, intertwined with creamy vanilla and seasoned oak undertones.

Palate: Vibrant citrus flavors with pronounced lemon and orange zest, complemented by fresh herbal tones and robust oak notes.

Finish: Clean and refreshing, balancing the fullness and sweetness of well-aged bourbon with a subtle hop bitterness.
