ABOUT

Tempranillo is universally synonymous with the robust, ruby-hued reds of Spain. Yet, nature occasionally throws a fascinating curveball. In 1988, a spontaneous natural mutation in a single vineyard birthed Tempranillo Blanco, shedding its dark pigments to reveal a vibrant, green-skinned grape. Bodegas D. Mateos recognized the raw potential of this anomaly immediately. Situated in Aldeanueva de Ebro within Rioja Oriental, this seven-generation family estate treats the rare varietal with the sheer exactitude it rightfully demands. Young vines are strictly managed to keep yields brutally low, ensuring sheer concentration. The grapes undergo a meticulous selection process before an unhurried, gentle pressing. It’s a wine of undeniable tension.

The resulting liquid challenges traditional white Rioja archetypes. Instead of hiding the juice under heavy oak aging, the winemakers employ cold stainless steel fermentation to painstakingly amplify the grape’s intrinsic, electric character. You find yourself navigating a labyrinth of sharp orchard fruit grounded by a distinctive herbaceous edge. It’s a remarkably agile, unmasked expression. The precision here demonstrates why this mutation survived obscurity to become a modern Spanish benchmark.

TASTING NOTES

Nose: Aromas of bruised peach emerge immediately. The glass practically vibrates with an intense concentration of ripe nectarine and tart grapefruit, shadowed by a savory undercurrent of fresh basil and almond. It smells fiercely, undeniably coastal.

Palate: The anticipated tension materializes almost instantly. A prominent acidity drives through the palate, carrying substantial weight and an oily texture that effortlessly tempers the initial rush of zesty lemon confit. Crushed white stones ground the fruit.

Finish: The closure feels remarkably, intensely pithy. It stretches out with a persistent, elegant bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit rind and salted almonds, forcing your attention back to the rugged terroir. You will want another thoughtful pour.

FOOD PAIRING

This white possesses serious structural backbone. It stands up beautifully to the rich, iodine sweetness of garlic-buttered langoustines or a robust pan-seared halibut swimming in a briny caper lemon reduction. Roasted poultry also works exceptionally well. The wine’s lively acidity cuts straight through the heavy, gelatinous fat of crispy chicken thighs, elevating the entire meal with surgical precision.
