ABOUT

Napa’s shadow stretches long, but Sonoma’s volcanic ridges harbor entirely different ambitions. Winemaker Rob Fischer bypassed valley floor opulence to seek out a quirky six-acre Moon Mountain plot. Phil Coturri planted these dry-farmed vines in the 1990s. The terroir is undeniably eccentric. Situated near Monte Rosso on iron-rich soils, this organically farmed site yields profound fruit that translates its rugged surroundings directly into your glass.

This bottling revives an elegant structural framework rather than yielding to modern, high-alcohol trends. Fischer handles the harvested fruit with profound restraint. He gently de-stems and lightly foot-treads the grapes before native yeasts initiate fermentation in both open and closed vessels. It's pure, unadulterated California magic. By stripping away glossy oak treatments and allowing the site to speak, the wine reveals the mesmerizing tension of true cool-climate viticulture.

TASTING NOTES

Nose: Aromas lift with striking verticality. Crushed graphite and dried sage wrestle for dominance before yielding to tart blackberry. You’ll notice an intricate aromatic weave hinting at the untamed old vineyard, brilliantly pulling your attention inward without overwhelming the senses. Damp cedar emerges quite quietly.

Palate: Tension drives the core structure. Silky but persistent tannins frame a restrained burst of crunchy purple plums, tart black cherry, and crushed gravel. It boasts a startlingly bright acidity that slices cleanly through the dark fruit layers. Because the alcohol remains beautifully integrated throughout the sip, subtle herbaceous currents and intricate volcanic minerality surface harmoniously alongside the fresh, vibrant fruit.

Finish: Austerity meets a remarkable length. Iron dust and lingering black tea leaves coat the cheeks for minutes. The vital acidity pulses steadily, leaving a deeply earthy, mineral-driven resonance that absolutely refuses to fade gracefully into the background anytime soon. It leaves a rugged imprint.

FOOD PAIRING

This restrained Cabernet demands protein that respects its delicate herbal nuances. A thick-cut, bone-in ribeye rubbed with thyme perfectly anchors the wine’s electric acidity. Sharp, cave-aged cheddar beautifully matches the tannins' structural grip without overshadowing the earthy, volcanic character. For a slightly less conventional route, roasted duck breast, served alongside a tart cherry gastrique, brilliantly draws out the hidden red-fruit layers. It’s a truly flawless match.
