Glenn’s Creek "Tesla" OCD #5 Kentucky Straight Bourbon The Prime Barrel Pick #120

The mission of The Prime Barrel is to select the best-tasting bourbon, period.  Sometimes, that leads us to surprises.  OCD #5 from Glenn’s Creek Distilling was a brilliant surprise as a unique one-of-a-kind tasting bourbon with notes worthy of "dusty" bottle.

Glenn’s Creek is a small distillery in Frankfort, KY, with an output of less than 300 barrels a year.  They are hiding in plain sight in the legendary Old Crow Distillery bottling building next door to Castle and Key, just a few miles from Woodford Reserve.  All three historic distillery locations trace their roots to the 1800’s.  

Glenn’s Creek has been taking meticulous steps to distill innovative bourbon on homemade pot stills since 2015.  OCD #5 is fermented with a yeast strain that founder David Meier salvaged and propagated from a fermenter at the old distillery.  They use a low barrel entry proof before aging in barrels that are first toasted and then charred.  These techniques come together to create a handcrafted bourbon unlike any other. 

The Prime Barrel members selected this barrel of cask strength OCD #5 as the most balanced of the six delightful barrels they tried.  At 5 years and 2 months old, it is one of their oldest releases and features a sweet, smoky nose and palate with a medium-length finish.  The deep, oaky sweetness has overtones of a fine vintage dust.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose - Sweet and smoky with seasoned oak char, brown sugar, molasses and smoked vanilla
• Palate - Burnt brown sugar, toasted corn, the sweetness of maple candy boiled down from pure maple syrup, vanilla extract, and smoky barbecue 
• Finish - Medium length with toasty, nutty, and sweet notes of Corn Nuts with a peppery flourish and smoky barrel char.
