Copper & Cask Spirits is an independent bottler focusing on single barrel selections and cask strength releases, which so far have been relatively limited in the marketplace.

With the Breaking Bourbon crew, we had the opportunity to select from a range of single barrels, including bourbons of varying mashbills and ryes, so we figured why not? The barrels offered were all distilled at Ross & Squibb Distillery (you’re probably more familiar with their former name, MGP). We taste and reject a lot of single barrels. But because we taste so many barrels, we have been finding some great “MGP” barrels in the 5-6 year range from time to time.

This particular lot of options had quite a range, but we were unanimously drawn to one barrel in particular. Despite being the highest proof of the bourbons, it erred much more heavily towards the sweet side with little to no heat, drinking closer to 100 proof than its stated 117.2. A rich caramel sweetness weaved its way in, with prominent caramel sweetness complemented by other sweet dessert notes on the palate. It was the one for sure.

Was exactly as advertised

Absolutely Delicious

This will not start out as a 5 Star review but Copper & Cask 5 year has become one of my favorite bottles.

At first I wasn’t very impressed with it. With it being a cask strength bourbon I was excited when I got it, and immediately cracked it open and had a neat pour. For some reason I remember being underwhelmed and I put it away and figured I would let guests try it. I ended up pulling out on New Year’s Eve and I decided to try it again. I was shocked at how delicious it was, and I almost didn’t want to share it; it wasn’t the whiskey I remembered from the first pour. I think it is one of those bottles that needs to breathe bit to come alive. As I said in the beginning of the review, it has become one of my favorites and it will be a bittersweet moment when I finish the bottle. I hope PB does more picks with Copper & Cask, I will definitely be one of the first to get a bottle or three.
