ABOUT
ABOUT
Independent bottlings completely shift how we perceive familiar distilleries. WM Cadenhead secured a remarkable parcel from Glen Garioch for this 2013 vintage. The legendary Highland producer is renowned for its old-school, robust distillate. Half of this batch spent its entire life resting quietly in classic ex-bourbon barrels. Rather than using a single cask type, the remaining liquid entered Fino sherry casks in 2020 for a wildly transformative secondary maturation. This split maturation creates staggering complexity.
Fino sherry influence is notoriously difficult to tame in Scotch whisky. The dry, crisp character of the fortified wine can easily overpower a delicate spirit. However, Glen Garioch’s weighty highland malt possesses the exact structural integrity required to seamlessly balance that sharp, unexpected salinity. Blending the Fino-finished portion back with the bourbon-matured casks provides a brilliantly harmonious equilibrium that elegantly highlights the underlying apple orchard fruitiness. You get dense vanilla sweetness alongside bright floral crispness. The blend simply works with absolute perfection.
- Distilled in 2013 at the historic Glen Garioch facility
- Matured in a deliberate split of ex-bourbon and Fino sherry casks
- Bottled by WM Cadenhead at 46% ABV without chill filtration
This release strips away the deeply predictable distillery-bottled flavor profiles. Cadenhead’s chose to present the whisky at a sturdy 46% ABV without chill filtration. That pivotal decision ensures the viscous oils and dense flavor compounds remain entirely intact throughout the lengthy bottling process. You truly experience the raw, unpolished brilliance of the Aberdeenshire malt exactly as the cellar master originally discovered it resting in the warehouse. Every single sip demands absolute attention!
[[TASTING_NOTES]]
Nose: Fresh apple blossoms drift from the glass, quickly evolving into warm baked apple crumble and an incredibly unexpected swirl of raspberry ripple ice cream.
Palate: The mouthfeel is surprisingly dense and decadent. Vivid layers of sweet marzipan and creamy panna cotta gracefully yield to a vibrant, freshly sliced fruit salad.
Finish: Lingering waves of rich salted caramel merge with a distinct, slightly bitter dark chocolate orange note. A final dusting of dry cinnamon stays on the tongue.
[[FOOD_PAIRING]]
The bright orchard fruits and salty finish of this single malt demand rich, contrasting flavors. Pair it with a savory pork belly roast; the rendered fat easily absorbs the sharp Fino sherry notes while amplifying the bourbon cask sweetness. Aged Manchego perfectly mirrors the subtle salinity of the dram. For dessert, a slice of warm apple tart will beautifully echo the baked fruit qualities found right inside the glass. It undeniably elevates the entire meal.
