ABOUT

100% Malbec from estate-grown organic fruit from the Villa Seca vineyard in Maipu. This small, family winery farms only 15 hectares in the high altitude Lujan de Cuyos region of Mendoza. This malbec is unique as it sees no oak treatment, only 100% stainless steel tanks, and also goes through carbonic maceration.

The winery Bodegas Krontiras began in 2003. Constantinos passion for wine led him back to his wife’s birthplace in Mendoza and he started in 2003 when he acquired 2 vineyards; an 8 hectare, 120 year old vineyard in the Lunlunta, Perdriel subregion of Lujan de Cuyo and then an 18 hectare vineyard which he planted in Villa Seca, Maipu. This certified organic and soon to be Demeter certified biodynamic property embraces wine as a living system. The winery was built so that it works in an ecofriendly way and fulfills Bodegas Krontiras main rule: to respect Nature from the vineyards to the final product. The current total production of the winery is under 2500cs with four wines currently being produced: Rosado, Fresh Malbec, Classic Malbec, and Reserva Malbec. The wines are all hand harvested according to Bio-dynamic philosophy using only native Yeast, and hand made by their winemaker Soledad Valdes.

TASTING NOTES

This full Malbec is a blend of young and old vines from two individual vineyards. Deep purple color with some violet hues, this friendly wine shows matured red fruit with subtle hints of cedar. Pretty classic and darn tasty! Serve with burgers and blue cheese. This small, family winery farms only 15 hectares in the high altitude Lujan de Cuyos region of Mendoza. Their oldest vines of 120 years old, make up a portion of this Malbec. This wine was matured 10 months in new and used French oak barrels.

FOOD PAIRING

Unlike Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec doesn’t have a super long finish. Because of this, Malbec is great with leaner red meats (ostrich anyone?). The wine does extremely well with funky flavors like blue cheese and rustic flavors like mushrooms and cumin spice. Meat Pairings - Dark meat poultry and lean red meat. Malbec also pairs well with earthy flavors too, such as beef brisket. Duck, Chicken Leg, Lamb, Beef, Ostrich, Buffalo, Pork Shoulder Spices and Herbs - Look for spices that have earthy or smoky flavors such as: Parsley, Sumac, Thyme, Rosemary, Porcini Powder, Smoked Paprika, Black Pepper, Cumin, Coriander, Juniper Berry, Clove, Vanilla Bean, Garlic, Shallot, Green Onion, Barbecue Sauce Cheese Pairings - Look for funky and rich soft to semi-firm cow’s and goat’s milk cheeses. Vegetables & Vegetarian Fare - Mushroom, Roasted Vegetables, Green and Red Bell Pepper, Potato, Arugula, Kale, Chard, Grilled Endive, Onion, Beet, Tempeh, Lentils, Black Beans, Forbidden Rice
