ABOUT

Founded in 1975 by Bernardo C. Weinert, Bodega y Cavas de Weinert is located in Mendoza, Argentina. The estate vineyards are located in the regions of Lujan de Cuyo, Maipu and Tupungato. The vines are 25-100 years old and are planted at 3,000-4,000 feet to well-draining, sandy and rocky soils. The varieties planted at the estate are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gamay, Chenin Blanc and Tempranillo.

Winemaker Hubert Weber follows a minimalist approach to winemaking. The grapes are fermented in cement vats and then aged neutral, large oak of Slovenian or French origin. The reds are aged for 2-4 years but the Estrella wines – cask selections ‒ are aged much longer. The 1977 Estrella Malbec matured for 19 years in oak cask before it was bottled. Due to their size and relative neutrality, the casks don’t impart any oaky influence.

(45% Malbec/35% Merlot/25% Cabernet Sauvignon). The wine was aged for two years in French oak casks.

TASTING NOTES

Dark plum, leather and vanilla aromas mingle with flavors of licorice, nutmeg, and tobacco. The tannins are sweet and savory.
